In Smiljan, the scale of a village opens onto the scale of an idea. The Nikola Tesla Memorial Centre connects his birthplace with the experiments and work for which he became known. It is a reason to pause in a place that might otherwise pass as another name on a road sign.

Continue to Gospić for the Museum of Lika and the region's human story. Further north, near Perušić, Grabovača introduces the landscape beneath the surface. A guided visit to Samograd Cave reveals chambers and mineral formations, while the park's paths bring the story back into the open air.

In the east and south, Udbina and Lovinac ask for another kind of attention: to landscape, memory and everyday village life. Udbina overlooks the Krbava landscape; Lovinac's countryside holds springs, old mills and paths beneath Velebit. Let these places be more than stops between larger names. They are part of what makes a journey through Lika feel like Lika.

Before you go

Check museum and memorial-centre opening arrangements. Samograd Cave is visited with a guide and has steps. Respect places of worship and working village surroundings.
